Benefits of steaming to clear the channels and create radiance

Winter

Water is one of the most potent elements because of its flexibility and ability to become a carrier for other substances, such as medicine. Water reminds us that the same substance in different circumstances can appear completely new; ice and steam have the same base, but very different properties. As human beings are composed of 70% water, we too adapt to different situations. We can be cold as ice or hot-headed, depending on our internal temperature setting - our mind and emotions. But we can also use this powerful element to help bring us clarity in mind and body.

Steaming or svedhana is a traditional Ayurvedic treatment used to detox and purify the mind and body. It balances the five elements in the body, stimulates digestion, encourages the body to release toxins and can help clear congestion both in the sinuses and in the mind, such as unresolved emotions.

The steam and humidity open the physical and subtle channels, and encourage the release of sweat. As well as clearing congestion, the warm, steamy environment also calms the nervous system, and can improve circulation (hence the rosy post-steam glow) by increasing the moisture content of the skin. The humid environment of a steam session is an opportunity for relaxation, especially with some essential oils and supportive fragrances which can can create a beautiful sensory experience.

If you don’t have time for a full body steam, try a facial steam at home once or twice a week. This is particularly helpful to clear congestion that comes from seasonal changes in temperature and humidity (particularly in dusty, dry or cold conditions), such as in spring, during the rainy season, after travel or during illness. Before heading to the pharmacy for nasal sprays and medication, try adding some Ayurvedic essential oils such as peppermint, and herbs such as mint and tulsi (holy basil) for a fragrant and anti-bacterial steam session.

Create a weekly self care routine in the evening. A simple home facial and steam only need some basic kitchen ingredients, a bowl of hot water and a heavy towel:

  1. Clean your skin with your preferred cleanser. If you have normal to dry skin, you can use some natural yogurt and massage it gently over your skin. The lactic acid will clear bacteria without drying out your skin. Rinse with warm water.

  2. You can exfoliate if your skin is not irritated. For oily skin, make a paste with a teaspoon of rice flour and water and use a circular motion to lightly exfoliate. Use oatmeal for normal skin.

  3. Steam your face and neck with half a teaspoon of turmeric and 2-3 mint leaves in a bowl of hot water. Cover your head and the bowl with a heavy towel, and give yourself 10 minutes to breathe in the vapours. Make this an opportunity to close down the eyes, breathe deeply and relax. You can add essential oils such as rose (for redness), lavender (for relaxation) or lemon (for dullness). If your skin is red or irritated, 5 minutes will do. Be mindful of the hot water!

  4. Gently pat your skin dry and apply a mask. A home mask of one third of a teaspoon of turmeric, a teaspoon of yogurt and a small squeeze of lemon juice works well. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes. If your skin is oily, replace the yogurt with honey.

  5. Rinse your face and apply a natural moisturiser such as rosehip, coconut or almond oil.

Notice that when we are congested at a physical level, we lose our clarity and perception at the subtle level. A clear mind and body are wonderful tools to release old baggage and beliefs, and navigate the choices that lead us towards balance, peace and harmony.
